This Sweatshirt is one of 30 unique pieces, designed by Stephane Barbier and Lisa Konno, using the Pole Pole fabric we found in Kampala.
We found this Kitenge fabric in Kampala a year ago: turquoise with a turtle print and a ribbon stating “Pole Pole Utafika”. Chris, one of the tailors explained that it means: “Slowly but surely you’ll reach your goal” in Swahili – a language spoken in East Africa. This saying strongly resonated to us. A reminder of what we so often forget, being frustrated at the pace things are going (too slow!). As we’ve been building our brand Afriek for a while now, sometimes it feels like progress is not fast enough. To celebrate this slow progress of ever-learning and ever-growing, and appreciate the process to get where we want to go, we launch 30 unique sweatshirts, designed by Lisa Konno and Stephane Barbier, and customized by Mohamed and Ramzi from Makers Unite using the Pole Pole fabric.
